Spotlight Public and Peers

Malverne School District Community Posted on January 31, 2017 by Jan KasalJune 11, 2020

The January Malverne school board meeting brought two presentations. One informed the school board members about the school district facilities, the other depicted how Malverne teachers collaborate and organize their work. Any presentations are always welcome entertainment, as they cut the boredom of the school board reading sessions. First. Spiro Colaitis, the assistant superintendent, reported on facilities upkeep, bathroom upgrades, aerial (drone) surveillance, commemorative bricks, and the new fence in front of the high … Continue reading →

PTA meeting bond test refusal

Parents held a meeting at the Davison school library. In an informal atmosphere, we reflected on the past events and discussed upcoming events. The Family Craft Night this Friday, December 9, was one of them. No teacher was present at this meeting. Mr. Benfante demonstrated, on a case of 15-year old student, what happens when the mind is set passionately on improving continually “your project.” Persistence pays off. (There are several video clips available … Continue reading →

Malverne School District STEM Family Night

Malverne School District Community Posted on November 13, 2016 by Jan KasalJuly 5, 2020

The Malverne UFSD held its first ever STEM family night and many families took advantage of the opportunity to tour the ground floor of the high school where all activities were concentrated. The STEM is popular. SDs are implementing variations of the STEM. Some SDs collaborate on its implementation. For example, I posted about it here and here. In recent years, the STEM was enriched by letters A and R, creating acronyms STEAM, and … Continue reading →

The Doshi STEM program housed at LIHSA, the magnet school operated by BOCES, and the Malverne board of education were closely tied since the program’s inception. The parent meeting opened with a discussion about upcoming events. A parent prepared and distributed a list of events in order to remember them easier. Dr. Hunderfund, the superintendent, and Mr. Caputo, business administrator, presented the budget for the next school year. Their presentation was followed by Q&As. The proposals to install the AC system in the auditorium and HS field lights submitted last year were approved. The construction should start in summer.

Malverne School District Community Posted on March 4, 2016 by Jan KasalMarch 4, 2016

The residents’ representatives modified their regular “meeting in public” on February 9th, as only two of them were present. The management showed again their prezi they have shown at the LICEE meeting in January. Three district delegates will travel to “A Deferred Dream” conference organized by the College Board in Charlotte, North Carolina. (The College Board is home to David Coleman, the author of the Common Core Standards. He now moved on to “reform” … Continue reading →

Power of thousands of New York parents

Malverne School District Community Posted on January 3, 2016 by Jan KasalJanuary 6, 2016

“When I don’t keep abreast with opportunities, don’t write my representative in Assembly and Senate, and don’t rally in front of their offices, I’m depriving my child of an excellent education …and leaving $10K to $15K annually on the table.” This is a conclusion parents may have come to after following the recent news about the Long Island High School for the Artsi (LIHSA) and the Doshi STEMii program it houses. The amount is … Continue reading →

STEM Education and The “Other” Education

Malverne School District Community Posted on August 13, 2014 by Jan KasalMarch 20, 2016

This post has been updated on 8/15. See information at the end of the post. STEM STEM is a ubiquitous term that is used in … everywhere. After it was mentioned at the MUFSD BOE meeting I wanted to learn more about the origins, general development, and what it means in our local environment. Both kids being at their camps allowed me to use my quiet time for some summer reading and data compilation. … Continue reading →
