Malverne School District Community Posted on July 25, 2016 by Jan KasalJuly 10, 2020

At the school board meeting in May, the Malverne school district Common Core department summarized the initiatives management and educators conducted during the school year 2015-2016. Ms. Rachel Gross, the cheerperson for Common Core K-6, compiled the initiatives in a 9-slide presentation. “She brought things down to them [students]. It is now wonderful and the elementary schools have just flourished for it,” introduced the presenter and the initiatives Mrs. Ricca, the assistant superintendent for … Continue reading →

At the May, 2016, BOE “meeting in public,” Mr. Gilhuley has been appointed as Ass. Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. Mrs. Ricca will retire at the end of the school year. Doshi STEM program at the LIHSA, BOCES magnet school, ends this year. I covered Malverne district’s involvement in the program in several posts, for example here. The management is working on accommodating currently enrolled Malverne district students in a STEM program that they … Continue reading →

Malverne School District Community Posted on March 14, 2016 by Jan KasalJuly 5, 2020

Originally, only the instructional part of the budget review was on the BOE agenda for February 23rd, but a regular “meeting in public” was added in order to make up the Feb. 9th meeting. The evening started by a quick budget review followed by birthday celebration of Mrs. O’Connor, school board trustee. As a perk of low attendance, all attendees were offered a piece of the cake. The BOE announced that at the Annual School District … Continue reading →

“When I don’t keep abreast with opportunities, don’t write my representative in Assembly and Senate, and don’t rally in front of their offices, I’m depriving my child of an excellent education …and leaving $10K to $15K annually on the table.” This is a conclusion parents may have come to after following the recent news about the Long Island High School for the Artsi (LIHSA) and the Doshi STEMii program it houses. The amount is … Continue reading →

Professional Development Not Only for Educators

Malverne School District Community Posted on September 2, 2014 by Jan KasalJanuary 24, 2018

The post was updated 9/15 for the reflections on the first EdCampLI. In 2013, I attended various educational venues on Long Island, NY, and one of them was a pro Common Core presentation. The New York State Parent Teacher Association (NYS PTA) was sending Dr. Robert Aloise around school districts to explain the Common Core Initiative to parents. As it is common with top-down presentations and parent academies about the Common Core, Dr. Aloise … Continue reading →
