Malverne School District Community Posted on August 20, 2017 by Jan KasalJune 9, 2020

The abridged version of the following post, titled “The school budgeting process needs public input,” appeared in LI Herald on August 10th, 2017. (In print only). Here is the full text of the article, including references. Every year, school district communities across the New York State develop budgets for the public schools. Their efforts culminate in winter by a series of workshops before the budget vote in May. At the end of June, adjustments … Continue reading →

My Blog Is Three Years Old

Malverne School District Community Posted on March 30, 2016 by Jan KasalJuly 12, 2020
my blog is three years old district header

I launched this blog on March 22nd, 2013, inspired by a website launched by an anonymous group of Malverne school district activists whose mission was to promote their candidates for the school board. Their mission ended with the elections (2012). I intended to post information related to Malverne school district 12 for a longer time. Perhaps, for as long as I have kids in the school district, which could be another 12 years. I … Continue reading →

Presentation for Malverne School District Stakeholders

Malverne School District Community Posted on February 16, 2016 by Jan KasalJune 8, 2020

At the residents representatives’ meeting on January 12th, the management presented slides entitled “…” (pdf) with the motto “Excellence for All.” It was a shorter, modified version of a presentation that they had shown at a meeting of the Long Island Consortium for Excellence and Equity (LICEE). Malverne UFSD was one of 6 districts that presented and in Mrs. Ricca’s opinion the presentation was very well received. It certainly caught my attention. There were … Continue reading →

Welcome, Project Enroll Now increases its visibility

Malverne School District Community Posted on February 9, 2016 by Jan KasalFebruary 9, 2016

Last week, Project Enroll Now promoted the open house at the Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). They posted a promo flyer at one of the Malverne FB groups dedicated to education. (The post has been deleted since then). Project Enroll Now is a Malverne UFSD-based group. At the time of its founding, in 2004, its original purpose was to promote public schools located within the district. As the group members’ children … Continue reading →

Leaky pipe, athletic awards, and Regents exam

Malverne School District Community Posted on January 30, 2016 by Jan KasalMay 19, 2020

Few reflections on two Malverne school board “meetings in public” that took place on 11/24/15 and 12/8/2015, respectively. Two days before Thanksgiving and in anticipation of being served something better than “cookies and common core,” I attended a special BOE meeting on 11/24/15. It was supposed to start at 7 p.m. At 7:25, an absent board member was contacted by phone. While waiting, we shared our family Thanksgiving habits. The socializing came to the … Continue reading →

Power of thousands of New York parents

Malverne School District Community Posted on January 3, 2016 by Jan KasalJanuary 6, 2016

“When I don’t keep abreast with opportunities, don’t write my representative in Assembly and Senate, and don’t rally in front of their offices, I’m depriving my child of an excellent education …and leaving $10K to $15K annually on the table.” This is a conclusion parents may have come to after following the recent news about the Long Island High School for the Artsi (LIHSA) and the Doshi STEMii program it houses. The amount is … Continue reading →

Malverne School District Branding Effort 2.0

Malverne School District Community Posted on November 22, 2015 by Jan KasalJuly 5, 2020

The representatives of Malverne UFSD residents met in public on November 10th. This was the second time I regretted the meetings are not recorded or streamed. The first occasion being their meeting in October during which Dr. Romano, the high school principal, had students performed “il teatro delle molte lingue,” described in my previous post. I was not the only one impressed by the show. “…15 high school students individually thanked the Board using … Continue reading →

Malverne BOE Announces Participation in “Schools of Opportunity” Project

Malverne School District Community Posted on June 2, 2015 by Jan KasalJune 3, 2015

The Malverne UFSD BOE opened the May session in public by announcing the Malverne high school was awarded the gold badge in a pilot project Schools of Opportunity. This school year, the project was available in Colorado and New York only, as the project’s co-founders, Carol Burris and Ken Welner, reside in the respective states. The recognized schools got public attention in Washington Post, in the column Answer Sheet (here and here). This publication … Continue reading →

BOE Candidate Forum at Lakeview NAACP Chapter

Malverne School District Community Posted on April 29, 2015 by Jan KasalApril 29, 2015

The Lakeview NAACP chapter invited the Malverne UFSD BOE candidates to their regular meeting. The candidates were the current board member, Mrs. Bottitta and myself. The forum was well moderated by Mrs. Karen Aker with the assistance of Mrs. Phyllis Wright, both former school board members. The NAACP chapter is the only organization in the school district that consistently allocates the time to offer such forum to their members each year.
