Spotlight public and peers

Malverne School District Community Posted on January 31, 2017 by Jan KasalJanuary 31, 2017

The January SAC/BOE meeting brought two presentations. One informed about the school district facilities, the other depicted peer collaboration and work organization. The presentations are always welcome, as they cut the boredom of the sessions. Spiro Colaitis, the assistant superintendent, reported about facilities upkeep, bathroom upgrades, aerial (drone) surveillance, commemorative bricks, and the new fence in front of the high school. The fence was shown from different angles, including the aerial view. One picture … Continue reading →

Doshi STEM program at the end

Malverne School District Community Posted on June 13, 2016 by Jan KasalJune 13, 2016

At the May, 2016, BOE “meeting in public,” Mr. Gilhuley has been appointed as Ass. Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. Mrs. Ricca will retire at the end of the school year. Doshi STEM program at the LIHSA, BOCES magnet school, ends this year. I covered Malverne district’s involvement in the program in several posts, for example here. The management is working on accommodating currently enrolled Malverne district students in a STEM program that they … Continue reading →

Malverne UFSD budget review and HS career day

Malverne School District Community Posted on March 14, 2016 by Jan KasalMarch 14, 2016

Originally, only the instructional part of the budget review was on the BOE agenda for February 23rd, but a regular “meeting in public” was added in order to make up the Feb. 9th meeting. The evening started by a quick budget review followed by birthday celebration of Mrs. O’Connor, school board trustee. As a perk of low attendance, all attendees were offered a piece of the cake. The BOE announced that at the Annual School District … Continue reading →

LICEE quiet secret, College Board trip, 2016-17 budget

Malverne School District Community Posted on March 4, 2016 by Jan KasalMarch 4, 2016

The residents’ representatives modified their regular “meeting in public” on February 9th, as only two of them were present. The management showed again their prezi they have shown at the LICEE meeting in January. Three district delegates will travel to “A Deferred Dream” conference organized by the College Board in Charlotte, North Carolina. (The College Board is home to David Coleman, the author of the Common Core Standards. He now moved on to “reform” … Continue reading →

Presentation for Malverne school district owners

Malverne School District Community Posted on February 16, 2016 by Jan KasalFebruary 23, 2016

At the residents representatives’ meeting on January 12th, the management presented slides entitled “…” (pdf) with motto “Excellence for All.” It was a shorter, modified version of a presentation that they had shown at a meeting of the Long Island Consortium for Excellence and Equity (BOCES). Malverne UFSD was one of 6 districts that presented and in Mrs. Ricca’s opinion the presentation was very well received. It certainly caught my attention. There were really … Continue reading →

Leaky pipe, athletic awards, and Regents exam

Malverne School District Community Posted on January 30, 2016 by Jan KasalJanuary 30, 2016

Few reflections on two Malverne UFSD BOE “meetings in public” that took place on 11/24/15 and 12/8/2015, respectively. Two days before the Thanksgiving and in anticipation of being served something better than “cookies and common core,” I attended a special BOE meeting on 11/24/15. It was supposed to start at 7 p.m. At 7:25, an absent board member was contacted by phone. While waiting, we shared our family Thanksgiving habits. The socializing came to … Continue reading →

MUFSD schools branding effort 2.0

Malverne School District Community Posted on November 22, 2015 by Jan KasalNovember 22, 2015

The representatives of Malverne UFSD residents met in public on November 10th. This was the second time I regretted the meetings are not recorded or streamed. The first occasion being their meeting in October during which Dr. Romano, the high school principal, had students performed “il teatro delle molte lingue,” described in my previous post. I was not the only one impressed by the show. “…15 high school students individually thanked the Board using … Continue reading →

List of local assessments available for review

Malverne School District Community Posted on October 12, 2015 by Jan KasalOctober 12, 2015

The Malverne school community representatives opened their September meeting in public with awards recognizing successful students and teachers. Attendees were invited to a BookTalk, the first parent academy of the school year 2015-16. (It took place at Davison Ave school on Sep. 21st). More academies will be coming, but topics, nor dates were disclosed. It appears they’ll be dispersed throughout the year which requires residents to reserve multiple evenings, if topics offered will be … Continue reading →

What will you do on a snow day?

Malverne School District Community Posted on August 30, 2015 by Jan KasalAugust 30, 2015
snow-day-iPad

July’s board’s meeting “in public” was delayed 40 minutes. In August, I came 20 minutes late, just to the end of superintendent’s report or message. Total public—4, including a Herald reporter. Items on the agenda: Few thousands were transferred from instructional accounts to non-instructional and many special ed. and transportation contracts were signed. All items were adopted. When the public was asked to participate in their meeting, I raised my hand and said I … Continue reading →
